Engage | Backbase Connect 2020

Backbase Connect is the main yearly event by Backbase. It provides thought leadership keynotes on the future of banking, product updates, technological capabilities, and business opportunities.

This year was unusual for everyone, and in Backbase, we also had to adapt. Backbase Connect 2020 was the first fully digital event in Backbase's history.

Of course, we still needed to maintain the high quality our attendees were used to, so we heavily invested in motion graphics, camera work, and a brand new theme: Engagement Banking.

01 | Building the event brand

Having the theme in our hands and never before executing a digital event, we decided to use the same processes from previous years.

We got the briefing from the event manager and promptly started researching every digital event we could find. We also searched for meanings and visual expressions of the word "Engage" to better understand how we could bring that into our own Backbase brand.

After a lot of experimentation, the result was the swiveling lines revolving around or people imagery, together with a dual-color use of our typography and a strong engagement-based messaging. We also developed a brand new event logo.

We came up with the whole thing in 2 weeks.

02 | Spreading the word

Once the event brand was completed, we started working on the promotional assets. We designed a website and a digital event platform as well as all of our online visuals (social media banners & videos, and paid ad content).

03 | Recording and broadcasting

The event was prepared in two steps: the main sessions – which would be pre-recorded on stage – and the complimentary live sessions. All sessions were broadcasted from the same online platform (also part of our design project).

04 | The team

Although the corona pandemic demanded us to work physically apart, the team continuously collaborated to achieve this beautiful online event.

Again this year, I acted as an art director, developing the event brand, stage, and presentations, as well as websites and promotional materials together with the amazing Sima Boyko, and Funda Kahyaoglu. The event lasted for two days and was localized for EMEA-APAC and the Americas, with over 2500 online registrations.

We also collaborated with Ernest Trimon (Motion Graphics/Video capturing and editing) and Nico Alsemgeest (photography).
